Dries Buytaert and his friend while attending in school decided to create a communication or message board so that they can leave a message or note to their friends or even can chat with them even they are away.
The name drupal came from a word “drupel”, meaning “to drop”. It also implies in dropping a message to the on-line message board.
Later, the drupal users are increasing in numbers from several people until it grows exponentially. Recently this year 2011, drupal organization conducted a meeting to improve and share more ideas on what is drupal? as well as providing great services to their users.

It is free since anyone can download the modules freely and it allows anyone to manage, customize, publish and organize the content of the website. There is no registration fee or license fee on drupal. Drupal is good software to use since it can help you manage your own site and promote your own business.
